If we want the young generation to respond to challenges with creativity and inventiveness, we must create the conditions in which innovation is not only possible but encouraged. Meet Sri J Srinivasa Rao, award winning teacher of Electronics and Instrumentation (EIE) from Government Polytechnic Kothagudem, who uses active learning techniques to engage students and encourage innovation and creativity. The result – his students have been making it to the finals of Srujana-A State level Tech Fest-A Design Challenge every year. He was recently honored Best Teacher Award by the Government of Telangana.
With over 18 years of experience in teaching, Sri J Srinivasa Rao started his career in the department of Electronics and Instrumentation at Government Polytechic Kothagudem in 1999. He was instrumental in establishing and developing Skill Development Center at the college. His commitment in the department was establishing a campus wide WIFI connectivity with Optical fibre backbone. Innovative projects such as Campus Radio, Cloud based e-Learning, Mobile applications etc. were designed and developed way back in the year 2000 by his students. He also held increasing responsibilities at the other Government Polytechnics.
Sri J Srinivasa Rao areas of interest in research are Advanced Communications and Medical Image Processing and Analysis. As part of his PhD, he did research on Automated MRI Segmentation Framework for Brains with Tumors and Multiple Sclerosis Lesions. At VVIT, he has guided his students to reach the finals in designing and developing prototypes of Accident Information System and Automated Irrigation System projects as part of ISB Hyderabad Technology Entrepreneurship Program (TEP) Design Challenge. He encourages his students to implement IoT based projects using latest Arduino and Raspberry Pi development boards. He uses NPTEL videos to teach his students in addition to using blackboard, PPTs and animations in class to foster a yearning to learn. His teaching methodology helps to encourage in students, a hunger for learning and excitement about the next quest.
Sri J Srinivasa Rao is a professor who wears many hats. He has presented guest lectures in the field of Medical Imaging, Advanced Communications in various colleges. He is a reviewer and editorial board member of various international journals. He has also successfully organized various extra-curricular and co-curricular activities with students in addition to regular academics.. He has also been helping GATE aspirants during Sundays and holidays in various institutes such as GATE Forum, GATE Academy, TIME, VISHWA etc. since 2008.
